The sun didnt set on the British Empire due to its holdings across the world. WW started the decline and WW finished it. The two world wars so closely together sapped the British economy, military and will. Japanese involvement in WW was particularly devastating to European colonial empires as the Japanese, even though they lost the war, proved that Asians and Africans COULD defeat European armies. So, at the conclusion of WW, European empires, including the British Empire, came to an end. In some places Britain fought to maintain their empire. In other places, particularly after they grew tired of fighting, they just let their former colonies become independent. So, the sun has set on the British Empire and probably will never rise again...
